An unrepresentative Congress has given an unelected President unconstitutional authority to wage an unprovoked war.
"Individuals have international duties which transcend the national obligations
of obedience…Therefore [individual citizens] have the duty to violate domestic
laws to prevent crimes against peace and humanity from occurring"
-- Nuremberg War Crime Tribunal, 1950
First they came for the Communists
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
but by that time, no one was left to speak up.
-- Pastor Martin Niemoeller, Nazi Germany

Barack Obama becoming president will be a significant relief from the Bush years. But this is not the time for the progressive community to rest. Far from it. It is now time to redouble our efforts to bring about true progressive change. Just as FDR told activists to make him make the change that was needed, Barack Obama needs to receive constant pressure to make such changes. You can be sure that the corporate lobbyists and the DNC will be pressuring him to make only moderate, centrist changes. We must impress upon Barack Obama that:
The US should join the rest of the developed world and institute a single-payer health care system. This is what the public wants -- and the majority of the doctors, as well.
US troops need to be withdrawn rapidly from Iraq ...
with negotiations with the nationalist/anti-occupation groups in Iraq
with reparations paid to entities which will use the money to rebuild the country
with the US taking responsibility for the care of Iraqi refugees
with assistance for the clean up of ALL the depleted uranium left around the country
US and NATO troops should be withdrawn quickly from Afghanistan ...
with negotiations with the nationalist/anti-occupation groups in Afghanistan
with reparations paid to entities which will use the money to rebuild the country
with the US taking responsibility for the care of Afghan refugees
Police work should be used to go after al Qaeda, not warfare.
The US should insist that Israel stop attacking Gaza and rapidly agree to a settlement based on withdrawal to the pre-1967 borders. If Israel resists taking such action, Barack Obama should tell them that they would be classified as a "state sponsor of terror" and treated accordingly.
Obama should quickly sign the global treaties which Bush has rejected: on land mines, international courts, climate change, etc.
Obama should be brought to understand that clean electricity can be brought on line far faster and more cheaply through wind plants than by construction of nuclear plants. Such clean energy can be used to produce hydrogen for clean vehicles.
Obama should be brought to understand that "clean coal" is far beyond current technology, and that there are great environmental hazards with the proposed carbon dioxide sequestration methods.
Obama should rapidly put undocumented workers on a path to legitimacy, so that they can help our country get back on its feet.
A moratiorium should be placed on forclosures, and the ballooning interest rates should be brought down (because, among other things) the interest rates paid by the lenders are at record lows.
Housing loans should be renegotiated to reflect the actual price of the houses.
For loans that the government backs, the risk has disappeared, so the risk bonus should be removed. The loans should be recalculated as if the interest rate from the beginning was that of the most secure government backed mortgages.
Crimes of the Bush Administration should be investigated by special prosecutors.
All signing statements by George W. Bush should be both repudiated and published.
Vote stealing and voter supression in the 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008 elections should be investigated by special prosecutors.
Guantanamo Naval Base should be returned to Cuba since the US Navy no longer needs it as a coaling station.
US military spending should be cut to 1997 levels, and then cut further from there.
... and many more changes.
